Taylor Boyer, age 11 Pennsylvania
How do you see yourself in the new millennium? This was the question thousands of children around the world answered for the International ChildArt Festival art competition. To illustrate their ideas on the theme "Me in the New Millennium," these young artists used paint, pastels, crayons, chalks, ink, and dyes to create imaginative compositions.
There were several ways the children, ages eight to twelve, got involved. Some participated through their schools, while others entered independently. ICAF's international partners organized many of the national contests around the world. These partners were in charge of selecting their country's national entry. Many other countries sent artwork from multiple finalists to ICAF, where they were judged by a panel of specially selected jurors.
These jurors also selected all the winners from the United States. The jurors looked for originality of design, and they carefully evaluated how each piece represented the theme. Originality of technique, composition, color, and visual balance were also taken into account.
A special exhibit of the winning artwork is on display at The National Mall during the 2003 International ChildArt Festival. This exhibit allows everyone to share in the hopes, fears, and dreams of the new millennium.
