WORLD CHILDREN’S AWARDS ANNOUNCED
The inaugural World Children’s Awards were announced today by
the International Child Art Foundation at the conclusion of the World
Children’s Festival in Washington, DC.
The ICAF Youth Board Members and the Third Arts Olympiad finalists were
asked to nominate those individuals (or companies) who inspired and guided
them through their Festival experience. Based on the nominations, five
awardees were selected. Tiffany & Co. designed the 2007 World Children’s
Awards and provided these awards to the ICAF as the company’s donation.
The 2007 World Children’s Award recipients are:
LEGO Systems Inc. (creative corporation)
North Carolina State University College of Design (creative organization)
Congresswoman Madeleine Z. Bordallo (creative political leader)
Salma Hasan Ali, ICAF Director of Communications (creative volunteer)
Portia Davidson, Strategic Planner, US Army (ICAF Honorary Board Member)
LEGO Systems provided free interactive entertainment for thousands of
children and their families who contributed to a 41x60 foot LEGO mural
map of the United States. The NC State University hosted a Media Lab
at the Festival. Representative Bordallo gave an inspirational keynote
address at the Festival’s opening ceremony. Salma Ali helped arrange
print and media coverage that led to a front-page photo in the Washington
Times and features on CNN and Fox. Ms. Davidson inspired military families
to host the international delegates and moderated the festival ceremonies.
“Children and young people now comprise a majority in the world’s
population and yet they did not have an award to honor the leaders who
nurture their creativity and support their concerns,” said Dr.
Ashfaq Ishaq, ICAF executive director. “Hence, we instituted the
World Children’s Awards in 2007, a year that also marks the tenth
anniversary of the ICAF.”
The ICAF serves as the national art and creativity organization for
American children and the only international art for the world’s
children. A 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization registered in April 1997
in the District of Columbia, the ICAF integrates the art with science,
sport and technology to nurture children’s creativity and develop
empathy - preconditions for a more just, prosperous and nonviolent world.
