Peace Through Art

A lasting victory in the war against terror depends on educating the world's children, because educated children are much more likely to embrace the values that defeat terror.
- First Lady Laura Bush (May 13, 2002)
If we are to teach real peace in this world, and if we are to carry on a real war against war, we shall have to begin with the children.
- Mahatma Gandhi

Peace Through Art is a program designed to help 14- to 16-year-olds living in conflict zones around the world. Based on arts learning and new research on human behavior, the Peace Through Art methodology draws upon the creativity and imagination of young people, and teaches them the ethics of responsibility in this interdependent global village that has come to be our world. The methodology incorporates best practices from the fields of psychology, conflict resolution and peace education, while employing the power of the arts for self-expression, healing and communication.

The methodology for the Peace Through Art program was developed in collaboration with the University of Virginia School of Medicine's Center for the Study of Mind and Human Interaction, art therapists and conflict resolution experts.

The methodology will have universal application, including use in conflict prevention among youth groups within the United States.

Programs

The first Peace Through Art program took place in Washington, D.C., in 2002 to foster mutual understanding among 20 youth from Cyprus. Ten Turkish-Cypriots and 10 Greek-Cypriots who live on opposite sides of a green line dividing their country participated in the three-week long program. Learn more ...
